Many Indian students in the US are now anxious about visiting home. The fear stems from stricter visa checks and changing rules under Trump’s policies. For those on an F-1 visa with an Optional Practical Training (OPT) work permit, even a short trip to India feels risky.
Fear of Losing Entry to the US
OPT allows F-1 visa holders to work in the US, usually in paid positions. But unpaid volunteer work is also legally permitted. One student shared his fear on social media, saying he works as a volunteer in a hospital under OPT and worries about being denied re-entry after visiting India for his cousin’s wedding.
All Documents in Order, Yet Fear Remains
He has all required paperwork an updated I-20, travel signature, employment verification, and offer letter. His university’s Designated School Officer (DSO) even confirmed that travel is safe. Yet, he feels uneasy after hearing stories of students being questioned or refused entry despite valid documents.
Reports of Visa Denials and Detentions
Since early 2025, more travelers have reported increased visa scrutiny and sudden rejections. Some describe long detentions at airports. At the same time, thousands still travel smoothly. The inconsistency adds to the confusion and fear among Indian students.
OPT Volunteers Face Extra Scrutiny
Volunteer OPT roles, though allowed, are viewed with suspicion by border officials. Many fear officers may see unpaid work as fake employment meant to extend stay. This uncertainty makes even short family trips feel like a gamble.
Students Avoid Trips Amid Uncertainty
The anxiety isn’t limited to one case. Many F-1 visa holders now avoid international travel altogether. They miss family gatherings and important occasions back home just to avoid risking their legal status. The growing unpredictability has turned simple travel into a stressful decision.
