For Indian H-1Bs in the US, a layoff isn’t just a minor career hiccup, it’s a full-blown immigration crisis.
A recent post from a social media user captured this reality, where a skilled developer working in AI was suddenly laid off. Now he has just 60 days to find a new job or leave the country.
Weighing in his options, the techie is caught between applying for a B-2 tourist visa to extend his stay or returning to India before his savings vanish. And this simple dilemma has sparked a fierce debate online.
Many NRIs advise him not to don’t waste time as the B-2 route sounds good on paper, but it’s painfully slow and doesn’t guarantee anything. While you wait months for the application to process, you burn through rent, insurance, and groceries, without income.
Worse, if you still don’t find a job, you’re forced to return anyway, but with even less money and peace of mind.
Others argue it’s worth a shot. A few users shared personal anecdotes, saying they stayed back on a B-2, found a new job, and successfully moved back to an H-1B without ever leaving.
But the bigger picture is hard to ignore. The US job market isn’t what it used to be. Sponsorships are drying up. And every day spent waiting comes at a cost, financial, emotional, and legal.
At this point, more and more laid-off H-1B workers are choosing the quicker, cleaner option to go back to India, regroup, and maybe even explore better opportunities from home.
