There has been a lot of talk going around the health of Indian democracy in both domestic and international spheres. Although these talks themselves should indicate a healthy functioning democracy, there have been many instances that challenge that narrative. Amidst all this, Indian democracy gets a stamp of approval from thousands of miles away.
The United States of America has called India an advanced democracy and trusts the electoral process of the country to be free and fair. When the State department was asked whether the US will send election observers to India, which is going to hold the biggest election in the world, the spokesperson of the department said no.
The spokesperson further said that the US is committed to strengthening its cooperation with partners in India. Recently, there have been many questions around free and fair electoral practice in India after a few incidents which were unfortunate.
This reassurance from the US is good news for the Indian government although India has usually observed a practice of indifference when a foreign entity comments on the internal functioning of democracy in India.
