The supposed gas station robbery in Duluth, Minnesota, was nothing but a staged act, according to the police investigation.
The cashier, Raj Patel of Indian origin, and Danny Curtis were behind the whole fraud.
Initially, Patel reported a frightening incident where he was allegedly attacked by a masked man who stole a large sum of money.
However, as detectives delved deeper, loopholes emerged in Patel’s story. Despite claiming to have been assaulted with a knife, no evidence of such an attack was found on Patel’s person.
Suspicion grew when security footage revealed that Curtis’s supposed punch was weak, hardly enough to knock someone out as Patel claimed.
Further scrutiny uncovered damning evidence: Patel and Curtis were seen together by the dumpster, where cash spilled from Curtis’s pocket when confronted by the police.
The motive behind their elaborate hoax soon came to light: Patel and Curtis orchestrated the fake robbery to pocket the stolen cash and claim insurance money.
Curtis eventually confessed, implicating Patel as the mastermind.
