In a devastating outbreak of violence, six inmates were killed and eleven more injured during clashes between rival gang members in an Ecuadorian prison over the weekend. The Guayas No. 1 prison in Guayaquil witnessed the deadly fighting, escalating tensions between organized crime outfits.
In response to the violence, inmates from ten prisons across Ecuador, including the site of the recent deaths, declared a hunger strike, the SNAI prison authority reported without providing a specific reason for the protest.
The incident has triggered the activation of security protocols throughout the prison service, as security personnel in five jails are reportedly being held by gang members. Authorities have reassured the public that efforts to secure their release are underway, and the officials appear to be in good health.
Ecuador has been grappling with a series of severe prison riots since 2021, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of inmates. The government attributes the escalating violence to power struggles between drug gangs. The country’s strategic location has turned it into a crucial transit point for cocaine en route to Europe and the United States, fueling criminal activities within its prisons.
President Guillermo Lasso has taken measures to address the crisis by increasing the presence of security forces and declaring a state of emergency in the prison system. However, the recent incident underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining order and safety within Ecuador’s correctional facilities.
Addressing this critical issue is a comprehensive approach, combining effective law enforcement measures with efforts to tackle the root causes of gang violence and drug trafficking. With such a holistic strategy Ecuador is hoping to find lasting solutions and ensure the safety and security of both inmates and prison staff.
