Bollywood has produced several superstars across generations, but recent findings from Ormax Media suggest a concerning trend. The latest analysis indicates that a new generation of bankable stars has yet to firmly establish itself in the Hindi film industry.
According to the report, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, and Ranbir Kapoor occupied the top five positions last year. A similar trend was observed a few years earlier, with Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Hrithik Roshan maintaining their presence. Ranveer Singh had featured in the list then instead of Ranbir Kapoor.
The report has sparked discussions about the future of Bollywood’s box office prospects. Since a significant share of cinema audiences belongs to the 15 to 30 age group, the industry may face challenges if a new generation of stars does not emerge soon. The report also highlighted the need to nurture younger talent before the current leading stars gradually step back.
It further suggested that the issue does not lie with film genres. Instead, there is a shortage of young actors capable of bringing freshness to romantic comedies and coming-of-age stories. The absence of relatable new faces has become a growing concern for the industry.
Efforts to build the next generation of superstars have been underway for years. However, inconsistent script choices have often prevented promising actors from sustaining momentum after initial successes. Kartik Aaryan, despite enjoying a strong youth following, continues to face challenges in cementing his position among Bollywood’s biggest stars.
Other emerging actors have faced similar hurdles. Lakshya’s opportunities to showcase his talent were reportedly affected by films like Chand Mera Dil. Meanwhile, Ahaan Panday has made a promising start, but the performance of his upcoming projects could play a crucial role in shaping his career trajectory.
Social media users have compared Bollywood’s situation with regional film industries, where several younger stars have successfully established themselves with major box office hits. Whether Hindi cinema can learn from these examples and successfully develop its next generation of superstars remains an important question.
