Why Salman, Kartik & Shahid Failed to Match SAK Phenomenon?

Saif Ali Khan and Cocktail 2 debate

The average performance of Cocktail 2 has reignited a debate that Bollywood has been trying to avoid for years.

Was the success of films like Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste, Love Aaj Kal, and Cocktail really about the stories, or was it largely about Saif Ali Khan?

On paper, Cocktail 2 had many of the ingredients that should have worked. It had a recognizable brand, a modern relationship backdrop, urban characters, and a genre that has delivered some of Hindi cinema’s most beloved films.

Yet the film appears to have settled for average business rather than becoming the blockbuster many expected. And that’s where Saif Ali Khan enters the conversation.

From roughly 2004 to 2012, Saif was Bollywood’s undisputed king of urban romantic comedy.

While other stars were busy playing larger-than-life heroes, Saif perfected the charming but emotionally confused city man who had everything except clarity.

Nikhil in Hum Tum. Nick in Salaam Namaste. Jai in Love Aaj Kal. Gautam in Cocktail. That’s a surprisingly difficult skill.

The challenge Bollywood has repeatedly faced is that these characters only work when the audience finds them naturally believable.

The moment an actor appears to be “playing cool” instead of being cool, the illusion breaks.

And history suggests that replacing Saif in franchises built around his persona hasn’t produced the desired results.

When Love Aaj Kal 2 arrived, it struggled to recreate the emotional connect of the original despite a younger cast and a contemporary setting.

Similarly, the Race franchise lost some of its identity once Saif exited.

Now, with Cocktail 2, the same conversation has resurfaced.

To be fair to Shahid Kapoor, most viewers agree that he has delivered a respectable performance.

The problem is that he’s being compared to a benchmark that was made for Saif.

Shahid’s strengths lie elsewhere, as seen in films like Jab We Met, Kaminey, Haider, and Kabir Singh.

And judging by the reaction to Cocktail 2, Bollywood may have just received another reminder that some casting choices aren’t interchangeable.
