Trolls Target Deepika Again: What Went Wrong Now?

Deepika Padukone trolled for Abu Dhabi ad

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh recently appeared in a new advertisement for Abu Dhabi tourism. The couple wore traditional Emirati attire — Ranveer in a black kurta suit and Deepika in a kaftan with a headscarf — as part of the campaign.

While most viewers appreciated the ad, a section of social media users began trolling Deepika for wearing a hijab, claiming she did it only for money. The outrage quickly spread, with Trollers accusing her of promoting a particular religion.

Fans of the actress immediately defended her, pointing out that brand promotions are part of a celebrity’s professional work. They argued that Deepika was simply doing her job, promoting tourism for a Muslim-majority country as part of her brand association.

One fan commented that people forget how advertisements form a large part of actors’ incomes and that Deepika was only following the brief for the campaign. Despite such logic, hate comments continued to pour in across platforms.

Some users went further, accusing her of never promoting Hindu religious destinations while choosing to appear in ads linked to other faiths. Fans quickly shut down the claim by sharing pictures of Deepika and Ranveer visiting temples together over the years.

Supporters questioned why an actress needs to justify her professional choices at all. Many said the trolling reflects a growing intolerance toward celebrities who work across diverse cultures and global markets.

For Deepika, this controversy is hardly new. She has faced similar hate campaigns before, particularly during the releases of Besharam Rang from Pathaan and Ghoomar from Padmavat. Both incidents sparked online outrage over her outfits.

During Besharam Rang, right-wing Trollers attacked her for wearing an orange bikini, calling it disrespectful to Hindu sentiments. The filmmakers clarified that the colour was chosen purely for aesthetic reasons, not symbolism.

The Ghoomar song also drew backlash over her costume, though the outfit was selected by the film’s design team. Despite repeated controversies, Deepika continues to face unjust moral policing for her on-screen and professional choices.

Yet, she continues to rise above hate. Her fans admire her resilience, noting that she remains committed to her craft despite constant online targeting. For them, Deepika deserves recognition for her work — not for what she wears or where she films.
