Suriya’s Vishwanath And Sons is turning out to be a decent overseas earner, with the film already crossing its breakeven mark and heading towards a healthy finish.
In North America, the film has collected around $2.1 million so far. The lifetime run is currently expected to finish below the $2.3 million mark.
The film has already crossed its breakeven target of $1.8 million in North America. With some more collections expected, it should also generate decent commission for the parties involved in the US market. That makes it a success in North America if not a blockbuster.
The overall overseas picture is even stronger. Vishwanath And Sons has collected around $5.3 million, or approximately Rs. 50 crores, across overseas markets in its first eight days. With the overseas breakeven placed at around $4.25 million, the film has comfortably crossed the required mark. So, overseas, Vishwanath And Sons can be termed a genuine HIT.
Interestingly, the film’s performance is not uniform across markets. The Telugu version is doing most of the heavy lifting, particularly in North America, the UK and Australia. The Tamil version, however, has underperformed comparatively in traditional Tamil markets, despite Suriya being a popular Tamil hero. Telugu audiences have played a big role in driving the film’s international performance, while the Tamil market has not delivered at the same level.
Suriya’s last film, Karuppu, collected around $7 million overseas, or approximately Rs. 67 crores. Vishwanath And Sons is unlikely to match that figure unless it shows exceptional legs in the remaining run.
Still, that does not take away from what the film has achieved. Crossing its overseas breakeven comfortably, crossing $2 million in North America and delivering a particularly strong run in Telugu markets is a very encouraging result for Suriya.
It may not beat Karuppu overseas, but Vishwanath And Sons has already done enough to emerge as a genuine HIT in the overseas markets.
