Double Blow to kangana-ranaut

Kangana Ranaut’s latest political biopic haven’t quite worked out to cash in on the purported positives in her contract, which is now making the audience raise questions about her career graph.

The last film of hers, Emergency, based on the contentious period during Indira Gandhi’s rule, has so far managed to rake in a paltry ₹15 crores at the box office, far from what could have been estimated given the big-ticket subject and Ranaut’s stature.

This is not the first underwhelming reception for one of her films, as Thalaivii also failed to make a mark, which raises a worrying trend in her choice of projects.

Political biopics are a genre that is really rich in terms of the story, but appeals to only the most niche and does not work with the tastes of mass cinematic escapism.

Critics mention that there’s no romantic element or a light-hearted comedic factor that often comes with larger movies.

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that there has been an “overdose” of political films, which means that audiences might be getting a little tired of this genre.

The only strength Ranaut has is the versatility that comes with her versatility, as proven by the excellent performances in Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Queen etc.

It may well be that for Ranaut to regain her audience and regain box office appeal, she needs to shift away from politically charged stories and genres, which have been the focus so far, into more emotional storytelling. By doing family dramas or romantic comedies, she would be back with the mainstream audience that celebrated her talent once.

While Kangana Ranaut’s sincerity toward portraying power icons in historical contexts is certainly praiseworthy, the marketplace reality of filmmaking has a different message that needs to be communicated to this talented lady-to-date.

Changing the game could bring her out as one of the best and universally acceptable performers within Bollywood’s industry.
