War 2’s Ayan Mukerji Jailed? No Comeback Chance?

In Hollywood, there is a term called movie jail, where directors who deliver flops find themselves sidelined. Studios and producers lose trust, leaving these filmmakers out of big-budget films and star-driven projects, regardless of their earlier achievements or past successes.

This idea is becoming increasingly relevant in Bollywood, where many once-celebrated directors now face setbacks after failures. Filmmakers who were once seen as future leaders of the industry are now struggling to make a comeback after both critical and commercial disappointments.

Ayan Mukherji, praised for Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, is among them. After setbacks with Brahmastra and WAR 2, doubts surround his involvement in major franchises. Even with Dharma Productions backing, audience reactions and box-office results have hurt his standing.

Abhishek Varman saw massive success with 2 States, but the failure of Kalank pushed him aside. Six years later, he still has no feature project lined up. This shows how quickly fortunes can change in Bollywood when films do not perform.

The pattern is repeated across the industry. Anurag Kashyap bounced back from the loss of Bombay Velvet by focusing on smaller OTT-driven projects. Vijay Krishna Acharya, once behind Dhoom 3, has struggled after Thugs of Hindostan, losing out on future opportunities.

Even veterans like Ashutosh Gowariker and Madhur Bhandarkar face challenges in regaining trust. Once backed by studios for ambitious projects, they now find themselves without the same creative freedom or strong production support, largely due to recent failures.

Bollywood’s version of movie jail is clear. Big projects can build credibility, but one failure can end that trust instantly. The reality is that box-office success often matters as much as creative vision in shaping a director’s career.
