Amid a surge of 80s and 90s nostalgia online, confusion spread over reports claiming that MTV had shut down completely. Several social media posts suggested the iconic channel ended its broadcast in Europe on New Year’s Eve.
These claims triggered emotional reactions across platforms. Many users expressed sadness and nostalgia, recalling a time when MTV revolved around music videos. Some also pointed out that the channel moved away from music content years ago.
One user on X wrote, “Childhood was awesome.” Another shared that they had recorded hundreds of hours of MTV80s and MTV90s content and still revisit it for memories. Many hoped the channel, or something similar, would return someday.
At the same time, others felt MTV had lost its identity long ago. Some users commented that the channel had “died” years earlier. Several posts simply read “RIP,” reflecting how people emotionally marked the end of an era.
However, reports of a complete shutdown were misleading. What actually happened was the closure of several MTV-branded specialist music channels in the UK. These included MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live.
According to Variety, these channels will no longer operate as linear television channels. However, the flagship MTV UK channel is still on air and continues with general entertainment programming.
In the US, MTV and MTV2 continue to broadcast as usual. Digital music and FAST channels like MTV Classic and MTV Live also remain active.
In the end, one reality stands out. The MTV people grew up with no longer exists in its original form. What remains today is only a fragmented version of that cultural icon.
