A franchise like the Spy Universe was expected to keep Yash Raj Films in the spotlight. But things changed after Tiger 3, and the situation worsened with War 2, which disappointed audiences, exhibitors, and theatre owners.
Trade experts have now shared their views on the decline of the franchise. Atul Mohan said that all the films repeat the same concept of saving someone from an enemy or characters fighting among themselves.
Distributor Akshaye Rathi pointed out that the Spy Universe needs a reboot. He added that the long gaps between releases have hurt the franchise. Films are coming out after two or more years, which breaks the momentum.
Akshaye further explained that while Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s stardom is unmatched, both will be around 70 in the next decade. He stressed the need to bring fresh, young talent who can deliver both in content and box office numbers.
Girish Johar from Zee Studios stated that the storyline and narrative need a complete rework. He said that young audiences are used to diverse content on OTT platforms, and the Spy Universe must adapt to their expectations.
Exhibitor Satadeep Saha also felt that the screenplay must be improved and changes should be made without delay.
With War 2 turning into a big flop at the box office, Yash Raj Films is now relying on Alpha to revive the Spy Universe. The franchise needs a strong comeback to return to its pre-Tiger 3 position.
For now, the future of other characters looks uncertain after the War 2 failure. There are no updates on Pathaan 2, and Tiger vs Pathaan is reportedly shelved. Fans are waiting to see what approach Aditya Chopra will take to save the franchise.
