There was a time when the release of Marvel movies used to be a great phenomenon. We witnessed mass hysteria around films like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Even standalone movies like Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok generated significant hype. People on Reddit and various social media sites would create fan theories, and there was a constant buzz around these movies.
Now, we find ourselves in a phase where there is literally no hype around “The Marvels.” Even during the time of “Thor: Love and Thunder,” various channels discussed theories behind it. However, the sheer lack of attention this movie is receiving marks the lowest point for the studio.
Speaking about the movie itself, it’s not bad. The comedy works, and the CGI is good, unlike “She-Hulk.” The post-credit scene is significantly satisfying. But is this what defines a Marvel movie? No! A Marvel movie used to raise expectations each time we entered the theater. Fans who have been with Marvel for more than 10 years don’t just want a comedy; they want something more. This is essentially the reason why this huge fandom is turning away from Marvel.
“The Marvels” may find it difficult to overcome its cost. And if this happens, it will be the first disaster in the history of the MCU post “The Incredible Hulk.” The studio needs to understand that with time, its fans have grown up. Now we don’t want the same old storyline. We are desperate to see things getting serious, a hint of what we have been teased with in Echo. Only that can bring back the glory of Marvel.
