Thunderbolts

Marvel has already revealed what it has for its fans in the year 2025; among the many projects is Thunderbolts*. What one may call the Suicide Squad of Marvel has the potential to be one of the biggest commercial hits of the year. With a star-studded cast including Harrison Ford, Julia Lois-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, Rachel Weisz, Olga Kurylenko and David Harbour, it will also serve as the MCU debut of one of the strongest characters yet: Sentry.

For those who are unaware of Sentry, he is essentially a superman equivalent with “a power of ten million exploding suns.” With a power set like that, Sentry could have been the default do-it-all hero of the Marvel roster if he were not held back by his alter ego, the Void. Void is as evil as Sentry is noble. The problem with Sentry or The Void being the antagonist is that the idea of a group mainly comprised of highly skilled yet very fragile human mercenaries going up against a godlike entity feels a bit unbelievable.

Not just that, but Marvel has too many powerhouses at this point. Often downplayed in order to serve as stepping stones for teams and characters to establish their level of threat. (For instance, the Hulk got manhandled by Thanos.) Recently, in Secret Invasion, we saw G’iah become one of the strongest characters yet. Further down the line, there’s Captain. Marvel and Thor, who is a literal god. The inclusion of Sentry can change the hierarchy of power in the Marvel universe (certainly not a Black Adam reference). Moreover, if the Thunderbolts defeat him, they are basically using the same “power of friendship” trope, which we have already seen a million times. Yet again breaking the power scale. Maybe MCU needs a restructuring with the power scale or it will be hard for even the fans to follow up.
