Bong Joon Ho is probably the greatest director of our time. Credited with crossing the cultural and language barriers often associated with Hollywood. Back in 2022, the director was working on a new futuristic movie starring Robert Pattinson titled Mickey 17. The movie was seemingly delayed to fit the IMAX availability and to fit in accordance with the lunar calendar.
The audience was, however, not ready to buy this excuse for the delay, as many accused David Zaslav, CEO of WB, of yet another instance of studio interference. Many speculated about the studio’s demand for a much more “accessible” version of the film. Had it been true, it wouldn’t have been the first time Bong’s film would be tampered with like this. Such was the case with Snowpiercer. For many, it was very believable, given the track record WB has made in tampering with movies. Whether it be Ayer’s Suicide Squad or the entire vision of Zack Snyder, WB has ruined a lot of its projects. Counterintuitively, these attempts to make the movies more “appealing” have often led to backlash.
Bong Joon Ho, however, has come out to clear up the rumors around the studio interference. Claiming that his contract clearly stated full control over editing rights. Furthermore, he claimed that the studio was quite supportive of his venture. Has WB finally learned from its past mistakes? We’ll witness it in January 2025 with the release of Mickey 17.
