This year’s Toronto Film Festival has delivered some highly anticipated films, continuing its long-standing tradition. Amidst all the thrillers, the serial killer ones are the most exciting but don’t offer an equally satisfying reward.
Recently, Anna Kendrick made her directorial debut with the film “Woman Of The Hour,” creating waves. She crafted something truly special: a serial killer drama that not only pumps your adrenaline but also combines dark humor and horror.
The movie unfolds in a decade-long narrative, focusing on Rodney Alcala, who has murdered an unidentified number of women. Amidst his killing spree, he also appears on a dating game show and wins it. The film takes you on a ride with Rodney, revealing how he gains trust before committing his heinous acts.
The direction is spot on, and the cast’s spectacular work shines through. Daniel Zovatto’s performance as Rodney is absolutely stunning, and the supporting cast complements him. In terms of storytelling, the film doesn’t show any of Rodney’s crimes; it relies on the audience’s imagination, and this approach succeeds.
Of course, the pacing isn’t flawless; it falters in some places but still gets the job done. Some characters may seem underdeveloped, but the entire film is a treat. Anna Kendrick, especially, establishes herself as one of the most promising talents of the upcoming generation, and this was just her first foray into directing.
