After delivering back-to-back successful films like KA and K Ramp, Kiran Abbavaram has regained the confidence of both the trade and audiences. His upcoming romantic drama Chennai Love Story, directed by Ravi Namburii and co-starring Sri Gouri Priya, now carries decent expectations ahead of its July 24 release.
The biggest positive for the makers is that the film has reportedly recovered its investment even before hitting theatres.
According to industry sources, the theatrical and non-theatrical rights have been sold for around Rs. 35 crores, with the OTT and satellite deals fetching impressive prices. That means the producers have already entered the profit zone, leaving the theatrical run to determine how successful the film will be for distributors.
Trade estimates suggest Chennai Love Story needs around Rs. 15 crore distributor share, translating to roughly Rs. 28–30 crore worldwide gross, to emerge as a clean theatrical hit.
The timing also appears favourable. Tollywood is riding a wave of optimism after the blockbuster success of Maa Inti Bangaaram and the strong box-office performance of Lenin. After several disappointing months, the industry has finally regained some momentum, and many are hoping Chennai Love Story can keep that winning run going.
The film has a few factors working in its favour. The teaser connected well with the youth, Mani Sharma’s songs have generated decent interest, and industry buzz has been encouraging. If it opens well and earns positive word of mouth, crossing the breakeven mark looks well within reach.
However, one major challenge cannot be ignored. Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, which is expected to release around the same time, is likely to dominate screens and media attention, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Given the hype surrounding Vijay’s final film, it could also impact Chennai Love Story’s openings in Telugu states.
With premieres scheduled for July 23 and a theatrical release on July 24, Chennai Love Story heads into cinemas with its finances already secure. Now, the real battle begins at the box office. If the content connects with audiences, the film has every chance of emerging as Kiran Abbavaram’s third consecutive success and extending Tollywood’s recent winning streak.
