Coolie Hindi Locks 8-Week OTT Window: Official?

Coolie Hindi OTT window

In India, box office success for any film aiming at a pan-India reach often depends on how well it performs in the Hindi-speaking belt. A strong reception in the North, particularly across multiplex chains in key cities, can dramatically boost a film’s commercial run. However, compared to the South, the North follows stricter theatrical rules, particularly regarding OTT releases and multiplex screenings.

As per the Multiplex Association of India, any film that wishes to screen in national multiplex chains across the Hindi belt must ensure its OTT premiere happens no earlier than eight weeks after its theatrical release. If the producers strike an early OTT deal, the film is banned from major multiplex chains in the North, making this a significant distribution constraint for regional films targeting national visibility.

This policy has forced several producers into a difficult position. While OTT platforms prefer earlier streaming rights, they’re unwilling to pay premium prices if required to wait for eight weeks. Despite this tension, some Tamil filmmakers are now accepting the eight-week window to secure stronger theatrical exposure in Northern India and other Hindi-speaking territories.

The latest example is Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated film Coolie, which has officially locked an eight-week OTT window for its Hindi version. Promotional campaigns have already begun across Mumbai, including rare placements on local trains—an uncommon strategy for Tamil-language films. Unlike many Tamil titles that receive limited Hindi releases, Coolie is being treated as a serious pan-India theatrical release with proper promotional support.

Despite its large-scale release strategy, Coolie may face tough competition for screen time in North India due to the simultaneous release of WAR 2, which is expected to dominate nearly 80 percent of showtimes. However, Coolie is still likely to hold a strong position in Southern markets, where Rajinikanth’s films traditionally perform well.

Should the theatrical run underperform and the producers decide to release the film on OTT before completing the eight-week window, they will have to pay a financial penalty to the Multiplex Association. This has already happened in other recent cases, including Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life. Still, Coolie stands apart as a sincere attempt at a nationwide release, rather than a token Hindi rollout.
