There has been criticism in the South media against Bollywood director Om Raut since Adipurush’s release. They argue that Telugu stars should not collaborate with Hindi directors due to their inability to effectively portray our heroes on-screen.
However, if we see the reality, despite Om Raut’s flaws, he has successfully delivered two grand-scale event films—Tanhaji and Adipurush. Although Adipurush faced heavy criticism for distorting Hindu gods, in terms of execution, Om Raut provided a larger-than-life experience.
Now, when it comes to Telugu or South Indian directors who have attempted or shown promise in delivering such grand scale event films like Padmaavat, Adipurush, Tanhaji or Brahmāstra?
Directors like Trivikram, although strong locally, have struggled with remakes or dubbed versions of his stories. The recent failure of the Shehzada (AVPL) remake was just an example even though it doesn’t belong to ‘event’ film category.
Other directors like Sukumar and Koratala have not yet tackled a solid 15-30 minute VFX block in their films. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to put South Indian directors above Om Raut.
Apart from Rajamouli, is there another name in the South Indian film industry who has attempted and delivered a grand event film and a large-scale experience? The answer, of course, is NO.
