Vijay Sethupathi and Arvind Swami’s long-pending project, Gandhi Talks, directed by Kishor Pandurang Belekar was finally released in theaters yesterday and is receiving mixed responses from audiences and critics.
Gandhi Talks is a unique attempt with no spoken dialogue. Despite being a star-studded project with lead roles played by Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swami and Aditi Rao Hydari, the Gandhi Talks team failed to create anticipation amongst the audiences.
Due to the lack of buzz, the film started its theatrical run with a very average opening. However, some viewers highly appreciated the film after watching it, noting that despite no spoken dialogue, the film remains engaging in many places.
Furthermore, they suggest that Vijay Sethupathi and Aditi Rao Hydari have delivered their best acting performances and are requesting others to support such unique experimental attempts by watching it in theatres.
At the same time, other viewers suggest that while the team tried to showcase a satire based on a flawed system, the film ended up as a mediocre attempt due to a routine screenplay. They feel the narrative required bolder choices, but the team failed to deliver, resulting in an average final film.
Additionally, some argue that despite the breezy romantic portions between Vijay Sethupathi and Aditi Rao Hydari, elevated by AR Rahman’s strong background score, the slow-paced narration made many portions feel like a lag.
With the low pre-release hype already Gandhi Talks film is struggling to attract audiences to theatres. In this case, the mixed responses are now turning into a major villain for the film, as many centres are reporting very poor bookings.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the film will perform at the box office and whether it can at least achieve the break-even mark in its final run.
