According to the latest reports, Ram Charan‘s Peddi is set for its OTT premiere on Netflix on July 16 following a decent but underwhelming theatrical run.
If the date is officially confirmed, the film will maintain a six-week gap between its theatrical release and OTT premiere. In today’s market, where many Telugu films arrive on streaming platforms within four weeks, this is a welcome move.
A longer theatrical window benefits everyone involved.
It gives exhibitors a better opportunity to maximize ticket sales while also encouraging audiences to experience the film on the big screen instead of waiting for its OTT release. The shrinking gap between theatrical and digital releases has been one of the biggest concerns for theatre owners.
That said, there is still some confusion regarding the streaming date.
A few reports continue to suggest that Peddi could arrive on Netflix in just four weeks on July 2 in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada, while the Hindi version is expected to follow the standard eight-week theatrical window and reportedly stream around July 30.
An official confirmation from Netflix or the makers is still awaited.
Whenever the film lands on OTT, however, it will face a completely different audience.
Theatrical viewing often benefits from the excitement of the big screen, fan celebrations and the overall cinema atmosphere. OTT audiences tend to watch films more critically, often pausing, revisiting scenes and discussing them extensively on social media.
That could make Peddi’s OTT run particularly interesting.
One of the biggest controversies surrounding the film was the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character. Many viewers slammed the excessive objectification of her role and strongly objected to scenes where Peddi’s character sexually molests her in the name of playful romance.
Apart from that, sections of the audience also pointed out screenplay inconsistencies, pacing problems and logic gaps.
At the same time, many viewers who skipped the theatrical release may appreciate its emotional moments, performances, music and production values without carrying the burden of massive pre-release expectations.
Will audiences focus more on the film’s strengths, or will the controversial scenes and screenplay flaws dominate the conversation once again?
The theatrical run gave Peddi a respectable performance, even if it fell well short of the high expectations. Its OTT reception will now decide if the film is remembered in the long run.
