Web series makers often explore controversial real life incidents, but legal and social limits apply. A similar issue has surfaced after singer Rahul Sipligunj’s upcoming web series entered legal trouble, raising questions about responsible storytelling based on sensitive cases.
Rahul Sipligunj is producing a web series titled Cult, which draws from the cult killings that occurred within a family in Madanapalle of Chittoor district. The incident involved parents killing their two daughters during sacrificial rituals before taking their own lives.
The case remains one of the most disturbing and controversial incidents in the Telugu states. Reports state that the series closely follows these real life events, which led to legal concerns due to the matter still being under judicial consideration.
The project faced a halt just before its planned OTT release on January 17. A petition filed at the Telangana High Court sought an injunction against releasing content based on a case that is still under court hearing.
The petitioner, Uttam Valluri Chaudhary, argued that releasing the series could interfere with ongoing legal proceedings. The High Court took up the matter, issued notices to Rahul Sipligunj and the production team, and reserved the final judgement.
The court stated that the final decision will depend on the counter filed by the team behind the web series. Until then, the release of Cult remains stalled under legal scrutiny.
