Mahesh Babu or Ranbir: Who Will Be a Better Lord Rama?

Ranbir Kapoor and Mahesh Babu as Rama

Ever since SS Rajamouli confirmed that Mahesh Babu will appear as Lord Rama in his upcoming globetrotter film Varanasi, discussions have shifted toward Bollywood’s Ramayana as well. The timing makes sense because Bollywood is working on a massive adaptation scheduled for a Diwali release next year.

Reports claim the budget is close to Rs. 4000 crore, making it one of the most expensive films ever made in India. Naturally, people are curious to see how Ranbir Kapoor will look and perform as Lord Rama.

The first installment will release next year. Director Nitesh Tiwari is planning to use that momentum to make the sequel even bigger. Until now, everything about the project appears well planned and clear.

With both films in the news, a debate has begun online comparing Mahesh Babu and Ranbir Kapoor to decide who will make a better Lord Rama. But that comparison does not make much sense because their roles are completely different.

In Rajamouli’s film, Mahesh Babu’s portrayal of Rama will appear only for a short but key portion. His character is part of a larger narrative spread across timelines, worlds, and mythological interpretations. Even if his appearance is brief, Rajamouli’s presentation will likely make it unforgettable.

Bollywood’s version is fully centered on Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama. The entire story revolves around him with no diversions or parallel narrative threads. Ranbir will carry the full emotional and dramatic weight of the role from the first scene to the last.

Only a few actors have justified the role of Lord Rama in the past. NTR set a legendary standard with Lava Kusa. After that, many actors were scared to take up the role because his portrayal felt divine and untouchable.

Sobhan Babu later impressed audiences in Sampoorna Ramayanam. Balakrishna earned respect for Srirama Rajyam. Suman delivered a dignified and graceful portrayal in Sri Ramadasu. Only Prabhas faced unanimous backlash for playing Rama in Adipurush. He appeared miscast and Om Raut’s execution further made it look worse.

So, in the end, this is not about Ranbir versus Mahesh. The real deciding factor will be how their directors bring Rama to life through storytelling, visuals, music, emotion, and aura. If everything aligns, both performances can stand out in their own space and era. Even if Ranbir makes a solid impact as Lord Rama, Rajamouli will make sure Mahesh’s impact to be even better in Varanasi even with less screen time.

For a character as divine as Lord Rama, there is room for more than one iconic portrayal.
