After Ram, Ravi Teja Taking a Bigger Risk with BMW?

Tollywood profit sharing debate

Tollywood producers are increasingly concerned about the sharp rise in hero remunerations over the past few years. While most producers avoid speaking openly about it, dissatisfaction over sky-high hero remunerations has become an open secret within the industry.

Film budgets continue to grow rapidly, but box office returns are becoming more unpredictable, and the overall success rate of films has declined. OTT and satellite rights have gone down drastically. In such a scenario, many producers feel that paying massive upfront salaries to heroes is no longer financially viable.

As a result, the profit-sharing model is becoming a trend. Instead of charging a fixed fee, actors either take a share in the film’s profits or acquire rights in selected territories. If the film succeeds, everyone benefits. If it fails, the loss is shared rather than falling entirely on the producer.

Producers argue that this model is more practical and fairer, especially in an era where even star driven films are struggling to break even. Discussions around this structure have intensified, and a few actors have already begun adopting it.

A recent example is Ram Pothineni, who chose a profit linked approach for Andhra King Taluka. Instead of taking a salary, he opted for distribution rights in two territories. Although the film received decent word of mouth, it flopped at the box office, resulting in losses for him.

Now Ravi Teja, long known for commanding high remuneration regardless of results, has also changed his route. For his latest film Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi, the producer publicly confirmed that Ravi Teja did not take any upfront payment. Instead, he agreed to a profit-sharing arrangement after release.

Ravi Teja has delivered multiple box office disasters in recent years, causing heavy losses for producers and impacting his market value. By choosing a profit-sharing model, he is taking a more responsible approach. This is definitely a sensible move that could encourage other stars to reassess their remuneration strategies.

Now it remains to be seen whether this film yields profits for him or results in losses, as happened in Ram Pothineni’s case.
