As reported earlier, Pushpa 2 is struggling to hit the break-even mark in North America. A massive sequel with huge hype failing to reach break-even is surprising.
Initially, the break-even value was set at $15 million. However, it has now increased to approximately $16 million.
What caused this change?
The Telugu version crashed starting from the first Monday in North America. This forced the U.S. distributor to enable passes in major theater chains like Regal, AMC, and Cinemark. Enabling passes reduces the distributor’s revenue compared to standard ticket prices. When customers use movie passes, the distributor earns significantly less per ticket. It’s a loss for any distributor when audiences use passes to watch a film in the U.S.
With passes enabled from the first Monday itself, the break-even point was pushed to over $16 million.
Currently, the Pushpa 2 has earned around $12.5 million, leaving it more than $3.5 million short of break-even.
Given the second weekend’s performance, reaching break-even now seems highly unlikely. Unless a miracle happens in the third week, Pushpa 2 may end up as a loss-making venture in North America.
