The tragic passing of young BRS MLA, Lasya Nanditha has sparked a discussion on the road safety measures that are followed at the Hyderabad Outer Ring Road. But a statistical report revealed that the number of deaths due to accidents on the ORR is on an alarming spike.
The Hyderabad ORR is a 158 km stretch of pristine multi-lane roadway. The legal top speed here is 120 kmph and as many as 1.5 lakh vehicles travel on the ORR each day.
However, the police department has revealed that many vehicles often go 140-160 kmph on the ORR. It is revealed that certain cars even travel at 200 kmph. At such high speeds, even the smallest of errors can lead to fatal crashes. The police revealed that these vehicles are fined heftily but the overspeeding culture isn’t stopping.
The fatal car accident that claimed Lasya’s life the other day is also attributed to overspeeding. A police case has been filed against the driver of the car who is recovering from the injuries.
A total of 170 people died due to the accidents on ORR in the year 2022 and the number steeply raised to 216 in 2023 with a shocking 127% spike. The sad passing of MLA Lasya adds to the 2024 tally.
