In a massive push for domestic defense manufacturing, Bharat Forge Limited signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government today. The agreement clears the decks for India’s very first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul, and development complex in Visakhapatnam.
The project is slated to come up across 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor. Strategically co-located near the Eastern Naval Command Headquarters and the Naval Dockyard, the facility will address critical propulsion maintenance for the Indian Navy’s frontline warships, creating around 750 direct and indirect jobs.
Executed in two phases, the plant will first deliver a repair complex with a tight 72-hour turnaround capability for the Naval Dockyard. The second phase will establish a high-tech Development and Assembly Hall featuring a hot test cell, aiming to design and qualify an indigenous marine gas turbine on Indian soil for the first time.
Self-reliance in defense is transitioning from a policy slogan into concrete factory floors. By bringing critical warship propulsion technology into the private sector, this MoU effectively secures the Navy’s supply chain against international disruptions. For Visakhapatnam, this cements its position as a major powerhouse on India’s strategic industrial map.
