In 2023, investment fraud cases in the city reported a significant increase in cybercrimes. The Hyderabad Cybercrime police station documented 1,271 instances of investment fraud, resulting in victims losing a staggering Rs 84.44 crore to fraudsters. Trading fraud cases also surged from 13 in 2022 to 34 in 2023, causing victims to lose approximately Rs 8.47 crore.
Customs fraud cases witnessed a notable rise, with 40 reported incidents and victims losing Rs 2.65 crore. Additionally, customer care fraud saw 160 reported cases, leading to victims losing Rs 3.61 crore.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner K Sreenivasa Reddy highlighted the cybercrime teams’ use of advanced technology to detect and apprehend perpetrators.
In 2023, the police arrested around 169 individuals involved in cyber fraud. The Cybercrime police station registered a total of 2,735 cases, with an additional 1,597 cases registered at local police stations. Commissioner Reddy emphasized ongoing efforts to raise awareness of cyber safety.
At the ‘Bharosa center’ of the Hyderabad city police, crimes such as blackmailing, phone harassment, stalking, and marriage-related cheating were prominent. Among 982 petitions received, 212 pertained to blackmailing, 185 to phone harassment, 106 to stalking, and 107 to cheating on the pretext of marriage. The police initiated 612 petty cases and registered 139 FIRs against suspects.
Traffic violations in 2023 were dominated by signal jumping, triple-riding, and driving on the wrong side. The traffic police recorded a total of 4,725,089 cases, collecting a penalty of Rs 71.69 crore.
Fatal road accidents resulted in 280 deaths and 2,090 injuries. Pedestrians accounted for 121 deaths, with beggars comprising the highest number at 23, followed by 18 jaywalkers. In 2022, the city reported 275 deaths in road accidents.
