Is ‘One Nation – One Election’ Possible?

One Nation One ElectionThe Modi government has made a surprising decision to convene a special session of Parliament from September 18 to 22, as announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi on Thursday through Twitter. This comes shortly after the conclusion of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on August 12.

While the usual winter sessions were originally scheduled for December, the unexpected arrangement of special sessions beforehand has caused political speculation and discussion.

Joshi expressed hope that these sessions, taking place on the occasion of the Amrit Call, will yield productive outcomes. It is anticipated that these special sessions will commence in the old Parliament building and conclude in the new one.

Despite the government not disclosing the specific agenda for these sessions, reliable sources suggest that the government might intend to introduce the Jamili Election Bill under the moniker ‘One Nation-One Election’ during these special meetings.

Political analysts are debating that if simultaneous elections across the board are not feasible, the government might consider slightly advancing the Lok Sabha elections and conducting partial simultaneous elections in as many states as possible.

However, party sources speculate that the Modi government might unveil unexpected and unconventional measures during these meetings, aiming to divert the nation’s attention and create a favorable atmosphere for the BJP in the upcoming general elections.

One of the key challenges for simultaneous elections lies in the substantial financial resources required for staffing, security arrangements, electronic voting machines (EVMs), and voter-verified paper audit trails (VVPATs). Nonetheless, the political sphere believes that due to the necessity of a two-thirds majority for constitutional amendments, approval for such changes is unlikely.

If the govt is ready for General Elections, can the Modi government dissolve Karnataka Assembly which was formed in May this year. The majority of opposition parties are expected to reject the proposal for simultaneous elections. The Congress party contends that this move could be an attempt to shift public attention away from concerns such as the Adani group fraud.
