Too Early To Write Off Kavitha Like Sharmila?

Kalvakuntla Kavitha political journey

The BRS Party has suspended Kalvakuntla Kavitha, and it seems only a matter of time before she announces a new party. Reports suggest that the registration process is already completed, making her next political move a key point of discussion.

People are drawing parallels between Kavitha and Sharmila. Like Kavitha, Sharmila also parted ways with her brother Jagan Mohan Reddy and floated the YSR Telangana Party. But Sharmila’s attempt did not succeed, forcing her to merge with the Congress and shift to Andhra Pradesh.

However, many feel Kavitha is not an easy wicket like Sharmila. Sharmila’s political activity was limited to walkathons and occasional criticism of rivals. In contrast, Kavitha has been deeply engaged in politics for years, building a strong base across Telangana.

Kavitha’s political roots lie in Telangana’s identity. Through Telangana Jagruthi, founded in 2006, she mobilised youth and women, offered vocational training to thousands, and revived Bathukamma, giving the statehood agitation a unique cultural push.

She served as the MP of Nizamabad between 2014 and 2019, gaining parliamentary experience and building connections in Delhi. Kavitha also played a key role in labour movements, leading unions at Singareni Collieries and national organisations like Hind Mazdoor Union.

Known for her oratory skills and grasp of Telangana issues, she connects closely with communities. Yet, her biggest challenge is that she must face not just opposition parties but also the BRS itself. Even KTR and KCR may eventually target her politically.

This creates a direct fight for the same voter base, making the road ahead challenging. Still, Kavitha’s journey and political experience set her apart from Sharmila. With her strong connect to Telangana’s cultural and political roots, it may be too early to write her off.
