The Supreme Court of India struck down a writ petition against Ministry of Home Affairs over the national song of India, Vande Mataram. The petitioner expressed anguish over singing of all six stanzas of Vande Mataram.
The petitioner accused MHA of social discrimination by making it mandatory. The Supreme Court said the circular of MHA did not make singing the song mandatory. It also clarified that there are no penal consequences for singing it.
The Supreme Court found the petition to be “premature” and said fear of social discrimination was “vague”.
The national song completed 150 years in November, 2025, and the MHA had sent out a circular that whenever the song is sung, it must be sung in entirety, which is all six stanzas.
However, there is controversy regarding it as some sections of Indians feel the song has a Hindu slant. In fact, when the song was played on the opening day of the budget session in the Telangana Assembly, AIMIM members walked out of the House.
