Tank Bund Road, a beloved spot in Hyderabad for midnight birthday celebrations, has lost its tradition due to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) decision to ban the practice.
The tradition involved opening cardboard boxes containing birthday cakes just before midnight, followed by loud cheers, cake smashes, and photo ops at the stroke of 12.
Now GHMC has expressed concerns about littering and traffic congestion caused by the midnight gatherings. Hence it has banned the age-old tradition of celebrating birthdays by cutting the cake at midnight at Tank Bund.
While Tank Bund had become a favorite location for picnics and late-night celebrations after a recent refurbishment, the tradition left the area littered with cake crumbs, confetti, and debris. GHMC implemented strict measures, including ‘Do Not Litter’ signboards and CCTV surveillance, with penalties for violations.
Opinions on the ban are mixed, with some supporting it as a positive step to preserve the area’s cleanliness, while others lament the loss of a cherished tradition.
For a lot of people who could not afford grand celebrations, cutting a cake at the Tank Bund was a beautiful way to start another year. So it’s a heartbreaking news for many.
Now people might be considering alternative locations for midnight celebrations, such as DLF Road and Durgam Cheruvu, marking a shift in the city’s nighttime social scene.
