Mayur Mundhe, a former BJP worker from Pune recently parted ways with his party, alleging that the party now prioritised popularity over sincere loyalty. Ironically, Mayur Mundhe was the same BJP worker who built a temple to honour PM Narendra Modi back in 2021.
Mundhe had earlier said that he built the temple as a mark of respect for PM Modi, who was like a “God” to him. He had argued that despite strong objections from the BJP’s national leadership, he had gone ahead with the temple because he wanted a place to worship Modi for himself and other “devotees”.
In his scathing letter of resignation, he highlighted that the core principles of the party have changed drastically, as the party now focuses on political outsiders rather than long-time party loyalists like him. For Mayur Mundhe it seems that his “God” was not enough to keep him in the party anymore!
This increasing culture of turning your politicians into “Gods” has been seen all across India recently. Trapped in their emotions, people often fail to separate the earthly from the divine and blur the fine line between considering someone an idol and turning someone into a God, which often gives way to authoritarianism.
People need to wake up and realize that politicians need to be treated as such so that they do not take you for granted. Their policies influence our daily lives, and so rather than worshipping them, we should learn to hold them accountable for the office they hold.
