The political landscape in the joint Kadapa district appears challenging for the YSRCP, with indications suggesting that TDP and its alliance candidates are leading in several constituencies, including Kadapa, Proddutur, Jammalamadugu, and Mydukur.
Chandrababu Naidu’s decision to field Varadarajulu Reddy, who is over 80 years old, as the TDP candidate for the Proddutur MLA seat has surprised many in the district. If he wins Proddutur, Varada is the eledest person in AP Assembly.
However, Varadarajulu Reddy seems to have gained support through word of mouth, particularly among traders and residents disenchanted with the governance of sitting MLA Rachamallu Siva Prasada Reddy and his brother-in-law Bangaru Reddy.
Varadarajulu Reddy, a senior leader, is contesting the election with the sentiment that this will be his last time. His reputation and track record are earning him respect and support from old loyalists and voters disillusioned with the current MLA.
Proddutur constituency, with its significant urban population and the dominance of the TDP in the Rajupalem mandal, presents an advantage for the party. The Vaishya community, especially unhappy with Rachamallu’s governance in urban areas, is leaning towards the TDP, bolstering its prospects in the region.
Despite Rachamallu’s reliance on government schemes to secure votes, his lack of coordination with YSRCP leaders and controversial comments, particularly regarding YS Sharmila, have undermined his standing in the district. Additionally, there is a concern within the YSRCP about the potential shift of minority votes towards Congress, which could further impact the party’s fortunes negatively.
Overall, the political dynamics in Proddutur constituency highlight the changing landscape in Kadapa district, with TDP and its allies gaining momentum while the YSRCP faces challenges in retaining its stronghold.
