Sharmila’s Son Into Politics-Good Move Or Bad Move?

YS Raja Reddy with YS Sharmila in Kurnool

Speculations have begun about the possible political entry of YS Raja Reddy, son of YS Sharmila. This has sparked interest in Andhra Pradesh’s political circles.

On the morning of his appearance, Raja Reddy accompanied his mother to the Kurnool Onion Market. Sharmila was there to protest against the falling prices of onions and the state government’s inaction.

Before heading to Kurnool, Raja Reddy took the blessings of his grandmother, YS Vijayalakshmi. These visuals were released to the media, subtly hinting at something significant in the making.

YS Sharmila’s own political journey remains unclear. She joined the Congress party largely to counter her brother, Jagan Mohan Reddy. Though she managed to dent YSR Congress, real political traction is still a distant goal.

Part of her struggle is tied to the Congress party’s poor standing. Nationally, the party is still recovering. In Andhra Pradesh, its credibility remains low due to its role in the state’s bifurcation.

Surprisingly, Sharmila seems to see a political future for her son in the Congress. This is despite the party’s vote share in the state being just 1.72% in the 2024 elections only a slight rise from 1.17% in 2019.

Yet, for Congress in Andhra Pradesh, the real benchmark is 5% vote share. If the party crosses that mark, it could spell trouble for Jagan Mohan Reddy.

If the YSR Congress falters in another term, the Congress might find an opportunity to bounce back. For Sharmila, this would also be a personal win a response to her brother’s “use and throw” approach.

Should this happen, other political parties might begin to take her seriously. Once that happens, public perception and electoral results may follow. However, translating that into reality is not going to be easy.
