Films like ‘Ctrl’ mostly tell us how social media damages our self-worth and breaches our privacy, often contributing to cybercrime and leading to mental health problems that manifest themselves in the ‘real’ world.

The Indian Film industry always had a variety of villains in its pockets ranging from strict parents to religiously motivated terrorists. Hence this new portrayal of AI and social media as villains feels like the latest addition to the group.

This recent shift seen in Indian cinema makes us question the intentions of the filmmakers.

It makes us wonder whether the filmmakers actually want to warn us about the real dangers of social media or are they just filling the void of new-age villains by turning technology into one.

A better option for the filmmakers would be to portray the true dangers of the digital world that leave an impact on someone’s everyday life rather than going out of their way to over-villanize something that has become such an important aspect of our world.
