If there was any sector that was totally disrupted during the coronavirus pandemic, it was the tourism sector. Traveling was brought to a standstill with prohibition on it almost everywhere. The post covid years saw a rapid growth in traveling and reached a new boom. Some new statistics suggest that the boom is gone and traveling is plummeting again.
The worst sufferer of this decline seems to be Asia which has seen a 16 percent decline in flight ticket prices. Flight ticket rates are seen as a direct indicator of travel demand in the region. The data suggests that Asians are traveling less than the rest of the world at the moment.
However, this decline in traveling is universal and the effect of it has been felt to some extent in all the regions. Taking China into account, international flights are operating at 70 percent of the pre-pandemic level.
Lower spending in tourism also indicates a reduction in income and saving rates. Tourists are generally preferring cheaper countries to travel like Turkey, Romania and the Balkans.
