The Indian giant OYO has landed itself in trouble over a controversial ad that many claim hurt their religious sentiments. The people have now started calling for its boycott.
The main cause of this outrage is a newspaper ad from OYO that read, “Bhagwaan har jagah hai… aur OYO bhi” (God is everywhere… and so is OYO). Many people, mostly Hindus, took offense asking the reason behind this ridiculous comparison.
Adding to the controversy, people dug up an old claim of the founder Ritesh Agarwal, who said that the OYO’s logo is inspired by Jagannath’s image.
It is no secret that the platform is famous among younger couples, which people claim is against our culture. Ritesh’s comparison to a Hindu deity is a huge offense for netizens who let the company know about it, with #BoycottOYO being the top trend on X.
“You have hurt sentiments of crores of hindus by making fun of our Gods,” a user posted on X.
Another asked for an apology writing, “Celeb Ritesh Agarwal has mocked the Hindu deities by comparing himself to our God. How dare he do such an audacity? He must apologise and remove Ad soon.”
So far OYO hasn’t issued any statements addressing this controversy.
