Kanchanjunga Express Accident

In recent years, several major train accidents have occurred in India due to mechanical failures and human negligence.

One such horrific, unfortunate, and tragic accident involved the Kanchanjunga Express, which collided with a freight train near West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri on June 17, resulting in at least nine deaths and 25 injuries.

The accident was caused by the goods train overshooting a signal and hitting the Kanchanjunga Express from behind, derailing three coaches. Fortunately, the passenger compartments suffered less impact, limiting casualties.

Rescue operations were promptly carried out, with the injured taken to North Bengal Medical College. The unaffected portion of the train continued its journey.

Bengal’s Chief Minister and Railways Minister both responded quickly, sending disaster response teams and announcing compensation for the victims.

Historically, India has witnessed numerous tragic train accidents in the last decade.

– Gorakhdham Express (2014): A derailment due to a rail fracture killed 29 people. This happened on May 26, 2014, the day Narendra Modi was sworn in as the PM of India for the first time.
– Janata Express (2015): A braking failure led to a crash, killing 39 passengers.
– Indore-Patna Express (2016): A mechanical failure caused derailment, resulting in 152 deaths.
– Hirakhand Express (2017): Derailment caused by potential sabotage, leading to 40 deaths.
– Amritsar Train Accident (2018): Two trains killed 60 people during Dussehra celebrations.
– Seemanchal Express (2019): A rail fracture caused derailment, killing seven people.
– Freight Train Incident (2020): A train mowed down 16 migrant workers sleeping on the tracks during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Over the years, numerous other tragic accidents have occurred, including derailments and collisions, claiming hundreds of lives. It is clear that the Railway Ministry lacks effective oversight and fails to prioritize passenger safety and infrastructure maintenance. The Railway Ministry is more focused on only beautification and ticket fare hikes.

There is frustration over perceived negligence in implementing advanced safety systems like anti-collision technology, which could potentially reduce the impact of accidents.

Concerns also linger about the severity of recent incidents, with injuries and fatalities raising questions about operational safety protocols.
