A major honeytrap racket was recently exposed in Sikar, Rajasthan, involving local influencer Renuka Choudhary. She allegedly operated an online extortion scheme targeting men through social media platforms.
Renuka, who portrayed herself as a social worker on Facebook and Instagram, would engage men through live streams and private chats. She slowly built trust, leading to personal video calls and occasional in-person meetings.
During these interactions, she reportedly recorded compromising videos and later used them to threaten her victims. She would allegedly demand large sums of money, threatening to file false POCSO Act cases if they refused.
One victim, a 64-year-old man, lost gold jewellery and Rs 12.9 lakhs under threats of legal and social consequences. Another victim was a government doctor, revealing a pattern where elderly or respectable men were being targeted.
When police arrived to arrest Renuka, she attempted to avoid custody by pretending to faint and feigning illness. However, the authorities remained strict and proceeded with the arrest despite her drama.
The investigation is ongoing, with police now searching for other members linked to the racket. Officials believe this may be part of a wider network operating through social media.
This case is a reminder of the risks of engaging in unverified online relationships. It also raises questions about the misuse of laws and the need for safeguards to prevent such exploitation.
