Captain Failed, Now Retired: Will KKR Trust Rinku Now?

KKR captain IPL 2027

Ajinkya Rahane‘s retirement has created another big problem for Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2027. KKR are once again searching for a new leader with very few proven options available in the current squad.

This is not a new situation for KKR. The franchise has repeatedly looked outside its squad whenever it needed a captain.

Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane were all appointed after joining the franchise.

Instead of developing a long term leader, KKR have mostly depended on the auction to solve their captaincy problem.

If KKR decide to pick a captain from the current squad, Rinku Singh looks like the strongest option.

He has become one of the team’s most reliable players, but his lack of captaincy experience makes it a risky call. Sunil Narine and Manish Pandey bring experience, but both are unlikely to be long term captaincy options.

The pressure is even higher because KKR have failed to reach the playoffs in the last two IPL seasons after winning the 2024 title.

Another wrong captaincy decision could make life even more difficult for a franchise desperate to return to the top.

KKR now have two choices. They can back Rinku Singh and begin a new leadership era, or once again enter the auction searching for an established captain. Will KKR finally trust a leader from within, or will another auction signing become their next captain?
