India has been a part of Google for a very long time, with a significant number of Indians contributing to the development of the company’s hardware and software. Now, Google has just announced that they will bring their manufacturing units to India, exciting tech enthusiasts.
Rick Osterloh recently announced that Google’s smartphone lineup, Pixel, will carry the “Made In India” tag.
Rick also revealed that Google plans to collaborate with overseas contract manufacturers to produce smartphones in India. During the event, he stated, “We’re all set to commence the manufacturing of Google Pixel series smartphones in India.” However, he didn’t disclose the names of the contract manufacturers.
Even India’s own Sundar Pichai expressed on Twitter that during the GoogleforIndia event, they revealed their intentions to locally manufacture Pixel smartphones, with the first devices expected to be available in 2024. He conveyed their dedication to being a reliable contributor to India’s digital progress and expressed gratitude for the support of the Make In India initiative.
Now, India’s Android user base dominates the majority of the market, but when it comes to choosing flagship devices, they have relatively fewer options. While Samsung offers flagship phones, Apple seems to be the most appealing option for consumers.
In earlier phases, Pixel phones were somewhat rare in the market due to limited availability. However, the country has a strong affinity for Google and its products, and when combined with a stunning camera software and a stock Android experience, Pixel phones can carve a niche for themselves.
Additionally, with Apple recently opening a manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu, more brands are likely to explore the Indian market. Although the market is predominantly dominated by entry-level and mid-range phones, with better options available, consumers might lean towards flagship devices.
