Cheap Internet, Expensive OTT: Who’s Responsible?

Jio impact on Indian streaming services

Just a couple of decades ago, for many Indian internet users, downloading meant hunting for free MP3s on random sites or searching torrents for video games and movies. Paying for digital content was rare at that time, mostly because costs were high and access was limited.

If someone wanted the latest movie or album, the easiest option was to grab it from a torrent. That was the norm until 2016, when Reliance Jio entered the market and changed everything. Jio made mobile data cheap and accessible across the country, and suddenly streaming and downloading became effortless for millions.

The bigger shift, however, was in the mindset of audiences. With the internet now widely available, piracy no longer felt as convenient as before. Platforms like Spotify, Netflix India, and Amazon Prime Video came in and offered what piracy never could—quality, safety, and convenience. Users no longer had to deal with broken links, poor audio, or malware risks.

Subscription prices, while still something to consider, started to feel reasonable when compared to the stress of piracy. Many people who once filled their hard drives with free MP3s are now paying for Spotify or binge-watching shows on Netflix and Prime Video. Jio’s data wave not only made the internet affordable, it reshaped spending habits and made digital content feel worthy of payment.
