In today’s quickly changing times, social media has undoubtedly become a very important part of our daily lifestyle. Among such developments, it is also a key responsibility to pay attention to the kind of content that is circulated on the numerous available platform, one of which is Tiktok, which due to its controversial nature and Chinese origins had been banned in India several years ago.
With a recent turn of events it seems that India is not going to be only country which will have the short-video sharing app banned, as arguably one of the biggest markets, i.e the US now stands just a few steps behind taking the similar step. The discussion has been made for quite a few time now and what makes the possibility nearer than ever is the development made by the US House Panel.
As per the reports, the US House Panel has unanimously decided to approve a bill which will enforce a ban on the platform from all devices if ByteDance refuses or is unable to sell the social giant. ByteDance happens to be the Chinese corporation which is in ownership of the platform and hence the issues.
China has a habit of being in the news for all the bad reasons and is notorious for stealing data. The legislation raised national security concerns due to similar reasons owing to the app’s Chinese ownership and it being used by a staggering number of more than a hundred and seventy million Americans.
The bill however still requires a companion legislation in the Senate and is set to be considered at an Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on Thursday for a vote on the matter. Ultimately, the bill will be giving ByteDance a time of 6 months or more exactly, 165 days to sell the platform to a firm which is preferably not of Chinese origin or else, leave the market.
