Air India Denied Boarding

For many travelers, flight disruptions can be incredibly frustrating—but what happens when an airline promises a refund and then keeps delaying it for weeks? That’s the situation one Indian passenger is facing with Air India and took it to social media to share his story after one month of waiting.

On December 18, 2024, the passenger was denied boarding for Air India flight AI2981 (Delhi to Mumbai) due to the airline overbooking the flight. After hours of dealing with staff and being shuffled around, they were placed on another flight and promised INR 38,000 in compensation. However, getting the money back has turned into a nightmare.

The passenger submitted all the necessary details, including bank information, on December 25. Air India initially stated that the refund would be processed in 2-3 weeks. But as January 20 rolled around, there was still no update. When they followed up, the airline extended the timeline further. Then, on January 24, Air India told them to wait another 7-10 working days. Yet, as of January 28, 2025, there’s still no refund.

Frustrated by the ongoing delays and lack of clear answers, the passenger took to social media to share their experience, calling out Air India for making customers chase what they are rightfully owed. “Are they just hoping I’ll forget about it?” they wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, with other users sharing similar experiences. Many are questioning why authorities like the DGCA are not intervening when airlines delay refunds indefinitely. Airlines have strict rules for passengers regarding cancellations or missed flights–but when it’s their turn to compensate, why do customers have to fight so hard?

For now, the passenger is still waiting. But their story highlights a larger issue: How long should customers have to wait to be treated fairly?
