Job Promotion Puts H-1B Visa Under Threat

H-1B Visa Under Threat

An H-1B worker’s success story is now turning into a visa nightmare, all thanks to a promotion.

Sharing their ordeal on social media, the worker originally entered the US on an H-1B visa as a Quality Engineer. But after a departmental shift and salary hike, they were promoted to Electrical Engineer in September 2024.

They got their visa stamped in December 2024 based on the old role, and their lawyers didn’t flag any issues. But with urgent family travel coming up, they now need to get stamping done again this December, and suddenly, HR is raising red flags.

The legal team has now asked for updated job details to evaluate the case. The employee, understandably panicked, is wondering if this role change will now trigger questions or delays at the consulate.

To make things worse, HR is dragging the process. Replies are taking over a week as the clock is ticking for the H-1B holder.

The worker now fears getting stuck outside the US because of an H-1B technicality. They wonder whether they should push HR and legal harder or quietly go for stamping using old job details. However, the latter might risk being grilled about current pay stubs and work profile.

It’s yet another example of how even a small change in job role can turn into a huge immigration headache.
