The series holds its essence even after this many years, Black Mirror is still horrifying, dystopian, and phenomenal. The series launched in 2011, a time when it was all about progressing tech, where we couldn’t dream about machines replacing man. And now here we are, talking to AI chats and losing jobs, aren’t we becoming a part of the Black Mirror world?
Now, reviewing the whole season is like going on a rollercoaster. It has its ups and downs, that is for sure, but the inevitable part is that the ride is scary. And this year, Black Mirror moves away from its usual theme of Dystopian tech to more of a story of Humanity.
You can stream the first episode on Streamberry, or thank God that Netflix still exists in this world. The season starts with ‘Joan is Awful’, one of the classiest episodes of the series. It is the story of Joan, a middle manager at an amorphous tech firm. She is having a really tough day and when she comes home, to calm herself down, she scrolls through Streamberry.
She hovers on a show called Joan is Awful, starring Salma Hayek. The show closes the gap between real life and reel life along with showing us how far can ‘Deepfake’ go. It also takes shots against modern streaming services and how personalized they can be, realistically speaking, it is destined to scare you. This episode goes deeper with every passing minute and will be pointed out as a Black Mirror classic for ages to come.
This episode will make you question reality, AR, Terms and conditions, and everything else that there is about modern entertainment and it will haunt you, that’s for sure.
Then comes the second one of the lot, probably the most forgettable episode. Loch Henry, the story takes place in Scotland. Pia and Davis will go on a quest to make a documentary about a mass shooter Iain Adair. Soon events unfold and we will come to know that Davis’s parents were associated with the event.
The outline of the episode seems really interesting but it lacks the pace that is set by the previous masterpiece. The direction of this episode is praiseworthy and so is the acting by Blenkin and Herrold, who nailed their parts. With a better pace and development, it could have been a strong second but it excels at one part and that’s maintaining the theme of humanity throughout the series.
An 80-minute brilliance with the taste of 2001: Space Odyssey and Aaron Paul, that’s how we can describe it. This episode has the most hype and it delivered. Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett just hit it off the park with their roles. They belong to an alternate 1969 and are on a space mission for the last six years.
This feature is packed with a mixed bag of emotions such as love, lust, grief, loss, toxic masculinity, betrayal, and all sorts of human actions. Though it throws hints at the beloved ‘Be Right Back’ from season 2 but doesn’t really keep technology or the dystopian ideas surrounding it as the main character.
The fourth episode focuses on the wrath of the paparazzis. The twisted tale of 2000 focuses on Bo and she is short of money. So Bo goes on a journey to get her big scoop, some secrets about Mazey Day. Though the episode is only 40 minutes long, it has a good style of storytelling and a perfect pacing and If you invest in the story, you will have a final surprise waiting for you.
The series has a perfect ending with the amazing ‘Demon 79’. The story revolves around Nida, a sales assistant who deals with racism during the National Front Movement in 1979. This checks all the boxes of horror along with taking us deeper into human psychology. The 74-minute long tale has brilliance in every category possible. From brilliance in editing to direction and even the field of acting, it is horrifying but satisfying and will keep you wanting for more.
Season 6 of the saga had ambition, it had psychology and tech, what else do you want from the series? This is complete perfection in every aspect of entertainment, this season will make you think. And having stars such as Aaron Paul, Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek, Paapa Essiedu, and more, it will be a great investment even if you haven’t watched the previous installments. So is it a must-watch? Absolutely.
