In a surprising announcement, Netflix has declared that reality competition series ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ will return for another round, with the second season of the ‘Squid Game’ drama series also in the works.
This comes as a rather shocking move as the show has not been well-received by many of the fans and critiques alike, with a huge number of viewers leaving the show after the release of its first episode.
Based on the Korean Drama, fans of the original show have lambasted the spin-off almost since the beginning with many claiming that the spin-off makes a mockery of the original “Squid Game” message—that forcing people to struggle as a form of entertainment is wrong.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series, said that there was no red light in the decision to greenlight season two of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show premiered at Netflix.
However, this move of Netflix does make sense as the original scripted drama also holds the record as Netflix’s most popular series of all time, with over 1.65 billion view hours in the first 28 days after its September 2021 premiere and despite the negative reviews, the gameshow did make an entry in the Top 10 charts in 93 countries.
Shortly after Netflix made the announcement for Season 2, fans flocked to social media, especially ‘X’ to express their opinions with some of the fans going bonkers and failing to contain their excitement, ultimately flooding the comment section of the post with heart and fire emojis.
However, most fans expressed their disappointment how Netflix is simply trying to go for a cash grab and make yet another mediocre season of lackluster moments, questionable challenges, and an abundance of cringe-worthy humor.
