On paper, JioCinema is indeed making waves. From achieving record views during the Big Boss finale to securing rights for major sporting events, it’s a great time to be part of this platform.
However, they aren’t performing as well when it comes to streaming foreign content. While they excel in free streaming, they struggle to attract premium subscribers.
Currently, their plan costs ₹999 for everything. In terms of pricing, their primary competition in this category is Prime Video, which offers an ad-supported tier at a similar price point. Surprisingly, all of Prime Video’s prized content is now comfortably residing on JioCinema. So, why the discrimination?
The main issue is that most cinephiles and dedicated viewers have already binge-watched popular shows like Game of Thrones or Mr. Robot. In addition to timing issues in acquiring content, JioCinema is bombarding users with new series frequently, but many of them are perceived as lacking quality.
Amidst all this, Jio has launched a couple of plans in partnership with Netflix. While this move may not show immediate benefits from a business standpoint, it reflects a lack of faith in JioCinema.
Plan MRP: ₹1099
– Netflix (Mobile)
– Unlimited 5G data with Jio Welcome Offer
– 2 GB/day data
– Unlimited Voice
– Validity: 84 days
Plan MRP: ₹1499
– Netflix (Basic) – large screen
– Unlimited 5G data with Jio Welcome Offer
– 3 GB/day data
– Unlimited Voice
– Validity: 84 days
Can’t Jio do something similar with JioCinema?
They absolutely should. Although ₹999 a year isn’t a high-cost plan, people don’t necessarily want another OTT subscription.
